![]() Just want to hear what others think - especially from owners about any issues (good or bad) that may not come through a sound clip. Please excuse the length of this post - thanks to all who actually read through the whole thing! Any and all comments and opinions are very welcomed. My concerns - it the master volume good enough for the bedroom? How much of a step up is this from his Micro Dark. ![]() Orange - Seems to get a lot of praise for SS and seems to be a good pedal platform. My concerns - any care/maintenance issues with the tubes? Can he go from bedroom volume to jamming with friends in the garage? DSL20 may not be perfect for the metal he likes, but seems like a good, flexible, entry level amp that he can get a lot out of. Marshall - First tube amp will be good for him to learn and appreciate this part of the hobby. In his room, he prefers using pedals through the clean side of the Fender as opposed to the many available settings on the amp. When playing with his buddies he usually plays the Micro Dark with a Boss SD-1 and/or an MT-2. His favorite music is modern/death metal, but he plays other stuff as well. Right now he has an Orange Micro Dark with a 2x12 (eminance Man-O-War and Governor) and a Fender Champ 50XL. I have listened to both of these a bunch of times on videos, and my son played the Orange a few times at Guitar Center (we used to go almost every weekend before COVID so he could try stuff out). Neither one will be perfect, but at this point in the boy's life (15 years old, been playing for about 18 months) he doesn't need perfect, just looking for the next step for him. I like them both for what there are, and the price is right where I need it to be. ![]() Obviously, the reasons (so far) for looking at these two are different, but I want to hear opinions to learn more about these two. I am looking at one of these two amps as a Christmas present for my son. go for it.I know this will be an apples to oranges comparrison (got lucky with the pun!), but please bear with me - your opinions are greatly appreciated, and will definitely help me learn. This amp provides a flavor all of its own. its apples and oranges (see what i did there?) is it as good as a tube amp? in my opinion in many ways yes. The CR120 does exceptionally well with a DOD 250. It responds just as a tube amp does with the front end pushed along with a boost to push it harder. The dirty channel sounds amazing by itself, add in a boost and its even more amazing. The CR120 does exceptionally well with pedals. ![]() humbuckers, single coils, p90s, they all sound fantastic and bring out a new flavor though the amp. The drive is very transparent and pleasing to the ear. ![]() The overdrive is very classic rock, up to hard rock. You can go from tones of a slightly pushed tube amp to soaring full on over the top gain. If you want chime, a 7 or 10 band eq in the loop will give you any clean tone you want. The cleans are darker, nothing fender like about the clean channel. In a blind test many would think it to be a tube amp. The tone is very organic, nothing like any other solid state ive played though. The tone and characteristics of this amp are unlike any amp ive played though before. Does it sound like a tube amp? Yes and no. The CR120 is an analog circuitry solid state head.ĭoes it sound like a solid state? No. After owning the CR120 head for a while I thought id share my thoughts. ![]()
